US President George W Bush’s upcoming visit to India is a "historic opportunity" that should be used to dramatically alter the economic and business landscape of both countries, according to a premier business advocacy organization here. "We would only encourage all sides to really understand the dimensions of this historic opportunity and that it should not be missed -- and that is the alignment of these two democracies because this underpins this relationship and partnership of trust between the two countries," Ron Somers, president of the US-India Business Council (USIBC) told media persons. President Bush's national security advisor, Condoleezza Rice, said yesterday the US was still willing to seek United Nations authority for military action in Iraq, but insisted that the "diplomatic window" would not stay open very long. Ms Rice would not say how long the US was prepared to wait, other than to repeat the president's mantra that it was a matter of weeks, not months. The US has made similar walkout threats before, ever since Mr Bush reluctantly agreed last September to pursue the UN route in its confrontation with Iraq.

Yesterday's announcement of the Test and one-day squads to tour Pakistan later this year came without any of the withdrawals, conditional selections or general disquiet that marred the touring party selected for Zimbabwe almost exactly a year ago. While touring Pakistan is not without safety and security concerns, relations between the England and Wales Cricket Board and the players have improved to the extent that there was no question of players making themselves unavailable for selection. The ECB offered the players the opportunity of a meeting to discuss the tour via their representative Richard Bevan, of the Professional Cricketers' Association, but it was declined.
